FNCCEC VISION & MISSION

The First Nations Confederacy of Cultural Education Centres (FNCCEC) is the national non profit organization which represents eighty seven First Nations Cultural Centres. The FNCCEC is grassroots driven and directed by community members to carry the national mandate to protect, promote and revitalize First Nation languages and culture.

The FNCCEC provides technical support and program delivery to its member cultural centres. The FNCCEC also develops projects of interest and value to its membership. In addition, the FNCCEC is involved with public education initiatives such as cultural awareness which serves academic institutions, government, and the general public. The FNCCEC comprises of a national Board of Governors with the members duly appointed by their respective regions and territory.

The Cultural Centres are funding by the Cultural Education Centres Program (CECP) under Indian and Northern Affairs Canada. The CECP is a program designed to protect, enhance and develop Indian/First Nation culture; and, despite the number of cultural centres and cultural programs that are funded under the CECP, there is little uniformity in either the funding level or range of activities of the centres and programs. For instance, Saskatchewan has only one cultural centre which administers to the language and cultural needs of all First Nations in its province. This kind of cultural centre is identified as a Corporate Centre.

In addition to a corporate centre, there consists two other styles of cultural centre; Community-Based Cultural Centre and Band directed Cultural Program. The Community Based Cultural Centres provide program and services specifically for their respective communities. Band-directed Cultural Programs meet the language and cultural needs of their respective communities.

A main strength of the First Nations Confederacy of Cultural Education Centres has always been their flexibility in responding to community needs at a local level.

An objective of the organization is to work with member cultural centres to advocate for and reinforce language revitalization, language and cultural retention, and protection of traditional knowledge.

Other objectives include: to serve as a national organization and coordinating body for First Nation Cultural Centres; to provide information on First Nations languages, culture, histories, education and treaties to the public, government, First Nation communities and organizations, schools and aboriginal organizations; to establish partnerships and links with First Nation communities, aboriginal organizations, governments, museums, schools, mainstream cultural centres, and the public at large; to provide technical support to the member Cultural Centres; to assist in the development of community based training programs; and cultural awareness through public education.
